Description

Cataloged as RPM-009 by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-204 and die marriage record DMR-010, this 1937-D Buffalo nickel displays a D/D mintmark repunched to the south. Three die stages document the variety's production arc. Stage A in early die state shows both obverse and reverse surfaces with minimal wear. By Stage B at mid-die state, die gouges develop running south from the buffalo's nose on the reverse, while the obverse has also advanced to mid-die state. Stage C in late die state remains unconfirmed. The southward repunching means the original D mintmark impression sits above the final position, detectable as a faint shadow or notch at the upper serifs of the letter. The 1937-D Buffalo nickel is primarily famous for the three-legged variety, but the date also produced numerous repunched mintmark dies that merit study in their own right. Additional high-magnification digital photographs have been sought to further characterize the repunching. Buffalo nickels ceased production after 1938, making late-series RPM varieties like this one part of the final chapter of a beloved American coin design.
