1937-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-198 and DMR-004, this 1937-D Buffalo Nickel RPM-003 documents a repunched D mintmark from the final year of James Earle Fraser's iconic design. Four die states are recorded: Stage A shows a die scratch NW from the lower C of CENTS to E of FIVE in early die state. Stage B is mid-die-state but unconfirmed. Stage C presents a die gouge dot SE of the middle bar of E in FIVE at late die state. Stage D shows both reverse and obverse in very late die state. The 1937-D is the famous last year of the Buffalo Nickel series, replaced by the Jefferson Nickel in 1938. Denver struck 17,826,000 Buffalo Nickels in this final year — a healthy output representing the closing chapter of a design in continuous production since 1913.
