1937-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Notable for tracking four progressive die states rather than the typical three, this 1937 Denver Buffalo Nickel was documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-197 / DMR-003: Stage A EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B reverse and obverse MDS; Stage C reverse and obverse LDS; Stage D reverse and obverse VLDS. The four-stage progression through VLDS indicates this die pair was driven well beyond normal service limits. No directional displacement or additional markers are specified. The 1937-D is historically significant as the final year of Denver Mint Buffalo production, the same date-mint that produced the famous 3-Legged variety from a different die. Fraser's design was struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, with a substantial mintage of approximately 17.8 million. The Jefferson Nickel replaced this series in 1938.
