Three die stages document the production progression: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), Stage B with both in mid-die-state (MDS), and Stage C in late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). Each RPM variety within a given date-mint combination represents a separate working die that independently received a misaligned mintmark punch, and the existence of multiple RPMs for the 1937-D Buffalo Nickel reflects the size of the die population needed to produce the year's mintage. The Buffalo Nickel was designed by James Earle Fraser, whose composite Native American portrait on the obverse and standing bison on the reverse are among the most recognizable designs in American numismatics.
