1936-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-011

Description

Cataloged under UVC-258 and DMR-013, this S/S North repunched mintmark variety of the 1936-S Buffalo Nickel records three die stages across its emission sequence. Stage A is classified as early die state, though confirmation remains pending. Stage B is the most thoroughly documented phase: the reverse is mid-die state, and a characteristic bowl-shaped die scratch is visible beneath the 36 of the date on the obverse — a useful early die state marker for attribution. Stage C is designated late die state, also currently unconfirmed. Buffalo Nickels of this era, struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, frequently exhibit complex mintmark repunching from the hand-punched mintmark process used through the series' run from 1913 to 1938. The S/S North shift is the defining characteristic of RPM-011, distinguishing it from other 1936-S repunched mintmark varieties in the VarietyVista census.
