1936-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Buffalo Nickel from 1936 features a repunched S mintmark with a late-stage die crack developing in the denomination area. Die markers: UVC-188, DMR-005. Stage A: Reverse and obverse are EDS. Stage B: Reverse and obverse are MDS. Stage C: Light die crack through lower letters of CENTS — LDS; obverse is LDS. The crack through CENTS documents structural fatigue where recessed letter forms create stress concentration points under repeated high-pressure strikes. Fraser's Buffalo Nickel was struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel (5.0 g, 21.21 mm). The 1936 was the penultimate year of production at San Francisco before the series ended in 1938 with the Jefferson Nickel's introduction.
