1936-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Cataloged as UVC-186, DMR-003, this 1936 San Francisco Mint Buffalo Nickel exhibits a repunched mintmark visible as a secondary S impression beneath the primary strike. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A presents both the obverse and reverse in Early Die State, Stage B is in Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C shows both sides in Late Die State. The Buffalo Nickel series, designed by James Earle Fraser and produced from 1913 to 1938, used a 75% copper and 25% nickel composition throughout its run. San Francisco struck 14.9 million nickels in 1936, the penultimate year before the famous 3-Legged variety of 1937-D captured collector attention. During this era, mint marks were individually hand-punched into each working die at branch mints, making positional variations between the initial and corrected S punch inevitable across different die preparations. RPM-002 represents one of several cataloged repunched mintmark varieties for the 1936-S date, where careful examination under magnification reveals the telltale doubling of the serif details on the S mintmark.
