1936-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

Exhibiting a triple-punched S/S/S mintmark displaced to the south and east, this 1936 San Francisco Buffalo Nickel is cataloged as UVC-232 with die marriage DMR-009. The triple punching documents at least three separate applications of the mintmark punch, with the combined south and east displacement creating a complex spread pattern that distinguishes RPM-008 from the other repunched mintmark varieties for this date. Triple-punched mintmarks are less frequently encountered than standard double-punched examples, as they required three or more attempts before the engraver achieved acceptable placement. San Francisco struck 14.93 million Buffalo Nickels in 1936, and the numerous working dies that production required gave rise to a varied catalog of mintmark varieties. The 75% copper, 25% nickel composition and Fraser's Type 2 design with the bison on a recessed flat plain were standard throughout the series. The dual directional displacement on this triple-punched variety provides strong visual diagnostics for collectors examining the mintmark area under magnification.
