1936-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Identified as UVC-190 with die marriage DMR-007, this 1936 San Francisco Buffalo Nickel is the sixth documented repunched mintmark for the date. The variety results from the standard mintmark application process of the era, in which an engraver hand-punched the S mintmark into each working die individually. Positional variations between successive punch applications created the secondary impressions characteristic of RPM varieties. San Francisco's 1936 mintage of 14.93 million Buffalo Nickels was the second-highest S-mint output in the series, trailing only the 1937-S. The substantial die consumption associated with this production volume meant many individual dies were prepared, each with its own mintmark characteristics. Fraser's Type 2 design, with the bison on a recessed flat plain, had served the denomination since 1913. The 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy was consistent throughout Buffalo Nickel production. RPM-006 follows immediately after RPM-005 in the sequential DMR catalog, suggesting similar discovery circumstances or research periods for these closely numbered San Francisco varieties.
