1936 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-009

Description

Documenting a repunched mint mark on a 1936 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this WRPM-009 records an error created when the small D letter punch was impressed into the die more than once, with the second impression slightly offset from the first, leaving traces of the initial placement visible beneath or beside the final position. Repunched mint marks were common in the pre-1990 era when mint marks were hand-punched into individual working dies, a process that occasionally produced misaligned secondary impressions when the punch was repositioned between strikes. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1936D-1MM-006 and Wexler Variety ID 1936-D 1c WRPM-009, this Wexler Team attribution benefits from dual-system confirmation providing independent verification. The Denver Mint commenced cent production in 1911, and by 1936 its annual output had grown substantially, creating numerous dies across each production year and correspondingly more opportunities for mint mark placement errors that variety researchers would later catalog.
