1936 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

An extra eyelid below Lincoln's normal eyelid serves as the primary diagnostic for WDDO-001, the first cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1936-D Lincoln wheat cent. This Class IV (Offset Hub) variety was produced when the hub contacted the die slightly off-center during the impression process, shifting fine facial details just enough to duplicate the engraved eyelid line into a visible secondary arc. Die markers on the obverse include die scratches running southwest to northeast in the field to the right of the bowtie, while the reverse carries a die scratch running south from the top of the inside of the C in CENT. These scratches are specific to this working die pair and remain consistent across die states. Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-IV (second obverse, Class IV), Coppercoins 1936D-1DO-001, and Wexler Variety ID 1936-D 1¢ WDDO-001, the variety holds the distinction of being the primary doubled die obverse listing for Denver Mint cents of this date — a significant designation given how thoroughly Depression-era wheat cents have been studied.
