Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0028 with die marker reference DMR-004, this 1935 Washington quarter doubled die obverse exhibits a medium spread on GOD WE TRUST, visible as thickening and lateral displacement of the individual letter strokes. The die progressed through at least three documented stages. Stage A represents an early die state that has not yet been confirmed through submitted examples. Stage B is the best-documented condition, showing the obverse at mid-die state while the reverse exhibits a die crack running from Washington's head outward to the rim, passing through the letter B of LIBERTY. This head-to-rim crack through the B provides the single most reliable authentication marker for Stage B specimens, as it is both visually striking and unique to this die pair. Stage C is a late die state that remains unconfirmed. The 1935 Philadelphia quarter had a mintage of 32.484 million, only the fourth year of the Washington quarter series that had debuted in 1932. Early Washington quarter doubled dies from the 1930s are actively sought by specialists building die variety sets of the series, and DDO-003 occupies a significant position as the third-ranked doubled die obverse for this date in the VarietyVista catalog hierarchy.
