Description

Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-101, DDO-001 of the 1935 Washington Quarter is also cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0026 (DMR-002) and represents the primary doubled die obverse for this early date in the series, which began in 1932. The obverse exhibits a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and on the E of LIBERTY — areas where hub displacement transferred secondary design impressions visible under magnification. A doubled die obverse occurs when the hub is impressed into the working die more than once with a slight positional shift, and the overlapping images create the characteristic doubling collectors seek. All documented die stages remain unconfirmed, indicating that while the variety itself is established, the precise die-state progression has not yet been verified through multiple confirmed specimens at each stage. The 1935 Washington Quarter is an early issue in a series that would become one of the longest-running in American numismatic history. Doubled die varieties from 1930s Washington Quarter dates are scarce and command attention because the series' early years produced relatively modest mintages compared to the postwar boom that followed.
