Description

Discovered by Joe Feld, this 1935 Washington Quarter doubled die obverse displays a clockwise spread from a probable pivot point visible on the date. The pivot-based rotation means the displacement radiates outward from a fixed point, with design elements farther from the pivot showing progressively greater separation. Two die stages have been documented with distinct markers. In the earlier stage, the obverse carries a die scratch running parallel to the rim below the 3 and 5 in the date, while the reverse shows a heavy die gouge running northwest from the upper right branch just right of the arrow feathers and a die scratch trending southeast to northwest above the branch north of the RT in QUARTER. In the later stage, no significant markers have been noted on either side. Cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1935 25¢ WDDO-002, this regular strike variety dates from the early Depression era of Washington Quarter production, when lower mintages make die varieties from this period proportionally scarcer relative to total output. A die scratch runs SE/NW above the branch north of the RT in QUARTER.Submitted By: Joe FeldCross References: None known Obverse: None noted.
