1935 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Bearing the Wexler designation 1935 25-cent WDDO-003, this Washington quarter obverse exhibits clockwise spread from a probable pivot point located on or near the date. Pivot-style doubling occurs when the hub rotates slightly around a fixed point during the hubbing process, producing spread that radiates outward from the pivot in a clockwise or counterclockwise arc. Die markers include a die scratch running parallel to the rim below the digits 35, a heavy die gouge extending northwest from the upper right branch to the right of the arrow feathers, and a die scratch oriented southeast-to-northwest above the branch north of RT in QUARTER. The 1935 issue represents only the third year of the Washington quarter series, which debuted in 1932 with John Flanagan's portrait design. Doubled die obverses from these early Washington quarter years are scarce and carry a premium among series specialists. The combination of clockwise rotational spread and multiple positional die markers makes WDDO-003 straightforward to authenticate.
