1934-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with codes UVC-044 and DMR-009, this 1934-D Lincoln Wheat Cent carries the RPM-005 designation — a repunched mintmark from a Depression-era Denver Mint issue. Struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc), the 1934-D saw reduced production compared to Philadelphia, giving Denver die varieties an inherent scarcity advantage. Repunched mintmarks from the 1930s arose because mint marks were hand-punched into each working die at branch mints: a die sinker placed the D punch over the die face and struck it with a mallet, and any misalignment between the initial and corrective impressions left overlapping letter traces visible on struck coins. The RPM-005 sequence number indicates this is the fifth most significant repunched mintmark documented for the 1934-D date, suggesting a less dramatic separation than RPM-001 through RPM-004 but still meeting cataloging thresholds. Victor David Brenner's Wheat Cent was entering its twenty-fifth year of continuous production, and Denver's die preparation practices during this period generated enough misaligned mintmark impressions to populate a meaningful catalog of RPM varieties.
