1929 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Eighth and highest-numbered repunched mintmark currently documented for the 1929 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-008 (Wexler Variety ID: 1929-S 1¢ WRPM-008) extends an already impressive roster of S-mint RPMs for this pre-Depression date. The variety count — eight and potentially growing as new discoveries surface — speaks to a broader truth about die preparation in the hand-punch era: mintmark application was an inherently variable process, and every branch mint die carried the potential for visible repunching. San Francisco's cent production in 1929 was the facility's last significant output before Depression-era cutbacks reduced branch mint coinage dramatically. Collectors pursuing a complete set of 1929-S RPMs face the challenge of locating eight distinct varieties, each requiring careful examination to differentiate. The direction and extent of the secondary punch impression — whether north, south, east, west, or at an angle — is the primary distinguishing factor. Lincoln Wheat Cents from 1929 were struck in the standard 95% copper composition at 19mm diameter, and the S mintmark appears below the date. Cataloged by the Wexler Team.
