1929 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-005

Description

Fifth in the Wexler Team's sequence of repunched mintmarks for the 1929 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this variety (Wexler Variety ID: 1929-S 1¢ WRPM-005) belongs to a date with a mintage of 50.15 million pieces. San Francisco's role in cent production during the late 1920s was secondary to Philadelphia's dominant output, but the facility's distinctive S mintmark and hand-punching practices generated their own catalog of RPM varieties. Five documented RPMs suggests that multiple die pairs received imprecise initial mintmark impressions, a frequency consistent with the hurried pace of production at a busy branch mint. The 1929-S cent entered circulation on the eve of the Great Depression, and coins that survived heavy wartime and Depression-era circulation in readable condition are the specimens most likely to yield RPM attribution. Variety collectors examining S-mint cents of this period should note that the serif structure of the 1920s S punch differs from later decades, affecting how secondary impressions present under magnification. This variety carries no cross-references beyond the Wexler catalog designation.
