1928 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004

Description

Two documented die stages distinguish WRPM-004 for the 1928-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, providing collectors with a progressive narrative of die deterioration. Stage A shows a large mintmark with strong E/W die scratches through WE and a prominent secondary mintmark impression. Stage B reveals the same die after additional use, where the scratches through WE have weakened and the secondary mintmark image has diminished — direct evidence of die surface erosion during continued production. Reverse markers follow the same pattern: Stage A shows a series of short die scratches south from E of ONE, while Stage B presents no visible reverse markers, as the scratches have been worn away. San Francisco struck approximately 17.3 million cents in 1928, a relatively modest figure that makes S-mint Wheat Cents from this era scarcer than their Philadelphia counterparts. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #4, Coppercoins 1928S-1MM-004, and Wexler Variety ID: 1928-S 1¢ WRPM-004, the triple attribution across three independent classification systems provides exceptional documentation. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety's dual-stage die markers make it particularly interesting for collectors who study die life progression and the gradual erosion of attribution features during a die's working career.
