1928-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, this 1928 San Francisco Wheat Cent features an unusual die state sequence and a late-stage rim crack. Die markers: UVC-022, DMR-005. Stage A: LDS (unconfirmed). Stage B: Obverse and reverse are MDS. Stage C: Obverse is LDS; die crack from left wheat tip to rim through E of EPU — LDS. Stage A starting at LDS rather than EDS suggests the earliest die state specimens have never been documented. The wheat-tip-to-rim crack follows a natural stress line where the deep wheat grain recess creates a fracture concentration point radiating outward through the inscription. Struck at San Francisco in 1928, composed of 95% copper, 5% tin/zinc (3.11 g, 19.05 mm), Brenner's design was in its 19th year and the San Francisco Mint's modest output required manual S mintmark application to every die.
