Description

During the late Roaring Twenties, Denver Mint personnel hand-punched the D mintmark into each working die used for cent production — a manual process that occasionally left evidence of repositioning visible on finished coins. This second documented repunched mintmark for the 1927-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, cataloged by the Wexler Team as WRPM-002 (Wexler Variety ID: 1927-D 1¢ WRPM-002), preserves exactly that kind of mintmark placement adjustment. Repunched mintmarks occur when the initial punch impression was deemed unsatisfactory — perhaps tilted, too shallow, or slightly off-position — prompting the engraver to strike the punch again, leaving traces of the first impression alongside the final placement. The 1927-D cent had a mintage of 27.17 million pieces, a solid production run that ensured many die pairs were consumed and many opportunities for mintmark variations arose. This variety currently awaits listing in additional reference catalogs beyond the Wexler system.
