1927 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001 / RPM-001

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-501 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, the 1927-D Lincoln wheat cent RPM-001, which Wexler numbers WRPM-001, is a D/D North repunched mintmark whose obverse is also listed as a doubled die. Wexler writes the number FS-01-1927D-501 (013.51). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties gives D/D North and notes that the obverse is the doubled die it lists as WDDO-002, with an extra eyelid set very wide to the SE of the primary. In obverse stage A two parallel die scratches cross the upper forehead from west to east, with lesser scratches in the hair above it. In stage B the secondary eyelid and the repunching are both weaker, and abrasion appears between IN GOD WE TRUST and the rim. In stage C the secondary eyelid is very weak, the bottom of the secondary mintmark has been abraded nearly away, and abrasion doubling shows above IN GOD WE TRUST. Reverse stage A has a dot in the field beneath the C of CENT on its left side, a short die scratch running NE from the upper left of the N in UNITED, and another jutting SW off the R of AMERICA at its lower left leg; stage B shows light north-south abrasion lines above UNUM, and stage C very heavy ones above and between its letters. Russ LeBeau submitted stage A, later upgraded by Lloyd Hanson, who also submitted stages B and C. CONECA lists it as RPM #1; its Coppercoins number is 1927D-1MM-001. VarietyVista, which does not name a reporter, also gives D/D North and FS-501 and notes that the obverse is listed as its DDO-001. Under marker codes UVC-019 and DMR-002, the secondary mintmark is strong in stage A, with both sides early; medium in stage B, both sides in a middle die state; and weak at the bottom in stage C, both sides late.
