1927-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

The 1927-D WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse variety on the Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent. The primary diagnostic is an extra eyelid visible south of Lincoln's primary eyelid — a subtle but distinctive doubling from a misaligned hub impression during die manufacture. Extra-eyelid doubled dies are popular attribution targets on Lincoln Cents because the feature is localized and satisfying to confirm under magnification. Obverse die markers include a north-to-south die scratch parallel to the left side of the E in WE. The reverse carries its own diagnostics: a die gouge dot southeast of the period between E and P of E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a short die gouge protruding from the top of the right wheat stem midway down its length. Together, these markers allow confident attribution even on moderately worn examples where the doubled eyelid may be less apparent. The 1927-D Lincoln Cent was produced during steady Denver Mint output in the late 1920s, and while the base date circulated heavily, variety collectors have been searching for doubled dies within this date for decades.
