Description

A combination variety carrying both a doubled die obverse and a repunched mintmark on the same die, this 1927-D Lincoln Wheat Cent is doubly collectible as Wexler WDDO-003 for the DDO and WRPM-005 for the RPM. The doubled die manifests as an extra eyelid below Lincoln's primary eyelid and doubling on the bottom of the letters TY in LIBERTY — subtle but diagnostically consistent features that confirm hub displacement during die manufacture. The repunched mintmark, cataloged separately as Wexler 1927-D 1c WRPM-005, shows a D over D shifted west, meaning the D mintmark was punched at least twice with the initial impression displaced westward from the final position. Combination varieties where both a DDO and an RPM occur on the same working die are especially sought by specialists because they represent two independent production events — the hubbing anomaly that created the doubled die and the mintmark misalignment that produced the RPM — converging on a single die. No significant reverse die markers have been documented. The dual attribution under both the WDDO and WRPM Wexler systems ensures this variety can be located through either line of research.
