Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1927-D Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-005 displays a distinctive doubled die feature: an extra eyelid visible just east of the normal eyelid on Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait. Eyelid doubling is one of the more visually striking forms of doubled die variety because it affects a small, well-defined facial feature where even slight displacement creates a clearly recognizable secondary impression. The variety was documented from a low-grade specimen, and higher-grade examples are needed to establish definitive obverse and reverse die markers — the current examination notes indicate that both sides lacked sufficient detail to identify secondary diagnostics beyond the doubling itself. The 1927-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint during the interwar period, and no other cross-references are currently known for this variety, making the Wexler designation the sole attribution. Doubled die varieties affecting Lincoln's facial features — eyelids, eyebrows, ear lobes — are particularly sought after because they provide clear before-and-after comparison points that make identification accessible even for beginning variety collectors.
