1925-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004
Error
Description
The hand-punching of mintmarks onto Buffalo Nickel working dies at the San Francisco Mint regularly produced repunching events, and the 1925-S RPM-004 is cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-105 and DMR-005. The mintmark displacement is S/S North, with the original punch positioned south of the final mintmark location, leaving the ghost impression south of the primary S. Stage A (EDS) shows the reverse die in LDS (late die state) while the obverse is in an EDS condition — an unusual cross-stage condition suggesting the reverse had already seen service before this obverse die was paired with it. Stage B (MDS) is unconfirmed. Stage C (LDS) is unconfirmed. The 1925-S Buffalo Nickel, struck in the copper-nickel composition, was produced in relatively modest quantities compared to Philadelphia strikes of this period, lending S-mint Buffalo Nickel varieties a degree of additional interest among series specialists. The northward displacement of the second punch on RPM-004 places the ghost impression at the south foot of the S, an area that collectors should examine carefully under magnification when screening 1925-S Buffalo Nickels from original rolls or collections.
