1925-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002
Error
Description
An S/S East variety from the San Francisco Mint, this VarietyVista-documented 1925-S Buffalo Nickel is the second cataloged RPM for the date and awaits specimen submission for new color, high-magnification digital photographs. Die markers UVC-068 / DMR-003 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with a die chip in the upper loop of the mintmark at LDS and obverse at LDS. The die chip forming within the S mintmark itself is a distinctive late-stage marker that directly involves the area of primary diagnostic interest. James Earle Fraser's design was struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm. The eastward displacement indicates the initial S was placed slightly west of the intended position before the corrective second punch.
