1915-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Cataloged as UVC-008, DMR-002, this 1915 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark with the D/D rotated clockwise, leaving traces of the initial punch position visible alongside the corrected placement. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in EDS, Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). Repunched mintmarks on Lincoln Wheat Cents resulted from the hand-punching process used to apply individual letter punches to each working die, a method prone to positional variation that continued at the U.S. Mint through the mid-20th century. Struck in 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc at the Denver Mint, the 1915-D Wheat Cent comes from the early years of Lincoln Cent production when Denver mintages were still comparatively modest. The clockwise rotation of the secondary D impression provides a clear directional diagnostic for attribution, distinguishing RPM-001 from other repunched mintmark varieties on this date.
