1915-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Description

Carrying dual attribution from CONECA as RPM #2 and the Wexler Team as WRPM-003, this 1915-D Lincoln Wheat Cent repunched mint mark documents a D punch applied to the working die more than once with slight offset between impressions. In the early 20th century, mint marks were added to working dies by hand using a small steel punch — a process inherently susceptible to misalignment, since the engraver positioned the tiny letter by eye and struck it with a hammer. If the first impression landed slightly off target or was judged too shallow, the punch was repositioned and struck again, leaving overlapping impressions visible under magnification. The 1915-D was produced at Denver with a mintage of approximately 22.1 million pieces — a modest figure that makes varieties from this date somewhat scarcer in the surviving population. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait was only six years into its production run in 1915, and early Wheat Cent repunched mint marks are actively sought by variety collectors. The CONECA RPM #2 and Wexler WRPM-003 designations provide independent attribution pathways.
