1915-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Second in the cataloged sequence of repunched mint marks for the 1915-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, RPM-002 documents a hand-punching variation on a date of particular significance. The 1915-D carries a notably lower mintage compared to Philadelphia issues of the same year, making it a semi-scarce date in the Wheat Cent series and elevating interest in any documented die variety. Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-1202 and DMR-003, three die stages are tracked: Stage A shows the obverse at early die state with the reverse at late die state, Stage B at mid-die state is unconfirmed, and Stage C at late die state is also unconfirmed. The pairing of an EDS obverse with an LDS reverse in Stage A is unusual, suggesting the reverse die had seen heavy use before being married to this obverse. Victor David Brenner's bronze Lincoln Cent of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc was in its sixth year of production in 1915, struck at Denver where each working die required individual application of the D mint mark by hand punch. Repunched mint marks on lower-mintage dates command particular attention from variety specialists.
