Description
This 1911 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a die clash on the obverse where multiple reverse design elements transferred simultaneously during an unprotected die-to-die impact — specifically, part of the reverse N from ONE CENT is clashed between Lincoln's chin and bowtie, while part of the E from ONE appears clashed between the Lincoln portrait and the date. The dual-letter transfer indicates a particularly strong clash impact that drove the reverse design into the obverse die with enough force to impress two distinct letter fragments at once, rather than the single-letter transfers more commonly observed in lighter clash events. Importantly, this die clash originates from a different die pair than both the single-N clash variety and the reverse portrait clash also documented for the 1911-S date — meaning at least three separate die pairs for the 1911-S cent experienced clash events that left identifiable transferred design elements, pointing to potential systemic conditions at the San Francisco Mint facility during this production year that may have increased clash frequency. Die clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, typically caused by a feed malfunction in the planchet delivery system. Victor David Brenner's obverse Lincoln portrait, only two years into its production run in 1911, appears alongside the reverse wheat ears design. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, the coin weighs 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 1911-S had a mintage of approximately 4.03 million pieces, making it a lower-mintage early Lincoln cent date where die varieties carry additional collector interest due to the relative scarcity of the base coin.
