1911-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001
Error
Description
Holding the primary Wexler repunched mintmark designation for the 1911-D Lincoln wheat cent, WRPM-001 documents a D/D mintmark with the secondary impression displaced to the southwest — one of the most extensively cross-referenced RPMs in the entire wheat cent series. The Wexler Team recorded obverse die markers including a slightly curving northwest-to-southeast die scratch beneath the 19 of the date, while the reverse showed no recorded markers. This variety carries an exceptional depth of cross-referencing: CONECA RPM #1, Cherrypickers FS-01-1911D-501 (012.8), Coppercoins 1911D-1MM-001, and inclusion in CONECA's Top 100 RPM list — a distinction reserved for the most significant and collectible repunched mintmark varieties across all United States coinage. Denver struck approximately 12.67 million cents in 1911, only the third year of D-mint Lincoln cent production, and the hand-punching process used to apply mintmarks created natural opportunities for misalignment when the engraver repositioned the punch between hammer blows. The southwest displacement direction means the initial D impression landed below and to the left of the final intended position, and the secondary corrective strike shifted the mintmark to its proper location without fully obliterating the first impression. The FS-01-1911D-501 Cherrypickers designation (with Fivaz-Stanton catalog number 012.8) confirms this variety's significance within the standard variety reference, while the Coppercoins 1911D-1MM-001 cross-reference documents its position in yet another independent attribution system. Collectors should examine the D mintmark under 15-20x magnification, looking for remnants of the initial southwest-displaced impression partially visible beneath or adjacent to the primary D, and confirm the die by checking for the curved die scratch below the 19.
