1909 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

1909-S WRPM-002 is a repunched mint mark on the 1909-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S Northeast, with the secondary S northeast of the primary. Obverse Stage A: two scratches a little above center inside the D of GOD, running NW/SE; two scratches from the vertical bar of that D, one running WNW to the O of GOD and the higher one NW toward the rim; and heavy scratches around the mint mark. On Stage B the Stage A scratches are very weak. Stage C adds a chip slightly SE of the bust tip, and Stage D a series of chips (dots) above the I of LIBERTY plus a clash at the throat and bow tie. On Stage E the clash has been abraded away and most markers are gone. Wexler calls Obverse Stage F questionable: one coin showed a big die break plus a rim cud at 2:00, and more examples are needed to tell whether this was real or came from a bad planchet. Reverse Stage A: a chip in the field to the left of the L in PLURIBUS, level with its center. Stage B: a light scratch through the tops of the second U and the M of UNUM. Stage C: the Stage A markers are weaker. Stage D: the scratch through the second U and M has been abraded away, leaving only the part on the upper right side of the M's vertical bar. Stage E: all earlier markers are gone. Reverse Stage F is likewise questionable, with a large break and rim cud at 3:30 on the one example presented, and needs more examples to confirm. Lloyd Hanson submitted Stages A, B, C, E and F, and Doug Yost Stage D. CONECA lists it as RPM #1 and Cherrypickers as FS-01-1909S-501 (012.2); Coppercoins has it as 1909S-1MM-001. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties. Wexler and CONECA list it on their Top 100 RPM lists.
