1909 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

1909-S WRPM-001 is a repunched mint mark on the 1909-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/Horizontal S, with the secondary S lying on its side. Obverse Stage A shows the horizontal secondary mint mark very strongly, with nearly full detail, and lathe marks on the lower bust. On Stage B the secondary S is slightly weaker, losing a little detail NW of the primary mint mark; a gouge runs diagonally NW/SE below the first 9 of the date, lined up with the lower mint mark; the first two vest folds show heavy abrasion; and the lathe marks are gone. On Stage C the secondary S is much weaker, heavier abrasion covers the vest folds and the date and mint mark area, and chips appear over the E in LIBERTY. Reverse Stage A shows die clogging in the upper opening of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM (EPU). Stage B has a very weak crack at 4 o'clock, along the right edge of the right wheat grains. On Stage C that crack has strengthened and continues SE into the rim, and an irregular north-south crack passes through the grains a little above it. Lloyd Hanson submitted Stages A and C, and Kevin Flynn Stage B; Wexler notes the Stage B coin was an upgraded coin submitted by Lloyd Hanson. Breen lists it as #2058, CONECA as RPM #2 and Cherrypickers as FS-01-1909S-502 (012.3); the Coppercoins number is 1909S-1MM-002. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties. Wexler and CONECA list it on their Top 100 RPM lists.
