1904-O VAM-6

Description

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974 and revised in 2010, this New Orleans Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-6 (revised) under classification III2 4 with a C4b reverse, titled Doubled 1-4, O Tilted Left, carrying a rarity rating of 181. The obverse displays hub doubling on all four date digits, with some specimens exhibiting a filled 4. The O mintmark tilts slightly left. Two distinct reverse dies are documented. Reverse Die 1 shows slightly doubled top leaf clusters in the left wreath, shares its die with VAM-2A, and carries heavy polishing lines in the wreath bow, tail feathers, and left wing. Reverse Die 2 lacks those polishing lines and doubled leaves, sharing its die with VAM-6A. Collectors must examine both wreath leaves and polishing patterns to determine which reverse die their specimen carries. The full date doubling with tilted mintmark provides the obverse diagnostic, while reverse identification depends on polishing analysis. # Die 2 - No heavy die polishing lines in wreath bow, eagle's tail feathers or left wing.
