Description
Leonard Hinckley discovered this variety in February 1974, making it one of the earlier documented VAMs for the 1904 New Orleans Morgan Dollar. Classified as 5 III2 4 - C4a, the VAM-5 features a doubled date with the 1 showing doubling at the bottom of its top crossbar, a closed 9, and the upper right of the 4's lower crossbar doubled. The obverse profile also appears slightly doubled, adding a portrait dimension to the date diagnostics. Paired with reverse die C4a, this regular strike variety rewards careful examination of the date numerals under moderate magnification. The closed 9, where the loop is fully enclosed rather than open, provides a quick screening diagnostic before confirming the more subtle crossbar doubling on the 1 and 4.
