Description

John Higginbotham identified this variety in 2013, designating the 1887-P VAM-1N Morgan Dollar as "Clashed T" for a faint partial incuse impression of the T from TRUST on the reverse that transferred to the obverse during a die clash event. The transferred letter appears in the hair vee of the lower hair edge on Liberty's portrait, positioned where the reverse T contacts the obverse die when the two dies strike each other without an intervening planchet. Plate notation 1N III2 1 - C3a classifies this as a III2 obverse with a C3a reverse. A diagnostic die marker further distinguishes this die: a short polishing line at the gap below the jaw-neck junction provides a secondary attribution point independent of the clash mark. Die clashes were common at Philadelphia during high-volume production years, and 1887 ranks among the highest-mintage Morgan Dollar dates with over twenty million struck. The incuse T resulted from momentary contact between dies during a misfire, and its survival indicates the clash occurred before any die resurfacing that might have removed the evidence. VAM-1N requires careful magnification to distinguish the clashed letter from normal hair detail. =1887-P VAM-1N Clashed T= Discovered by John Higginbotham 2013 1N III2 1 - C3a (Clashed T ) Obverse III2 1 -Clashed Die with faint partial incuse t of Trust from reverse showing in Hair vee of lower Hair edge ''Die marker''- Short polishing line at gap below Jaw-Neck junction 872px
