1887 Morgan Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1887 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1887 Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY is spread to the west. The stars, the letters of E PLURIBUS, Liberty's eye, the hair under LIBERTY and the leaves nearest the cotton bolls are spread toward the center of the die. The eyelid is split, and doubling shows inside the upper lip and on the hairlines behind the ear. Obverse Stage A has no noted markers; Obverse Stage B shows clash marks from the lips, the top of the neck, and the back of the head under the bonnet. Reverse Stage A has a scratch running north from an olive on the olive branch and a gouge running SW from the upper right berry on the wreath's right side to a leaf. On Reverse Stage B clash marks appear between the left wreath and the eagle's right wing and between the upper right wreath and the left wing. Joe Groff submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-O-II, and its VAM number is 12.
