Description

Discovered in 2014, the 1883-O VAM-11A bears the designation "Doubled Ear & 1, Beveled Tail Feather, Die Break 8" and is classified III2 5 with a C3h reverse and die pair 181. The most dramatic feature is a radial die crack extending from the rim upward past the right side of the right 8, accompanied by a displaced field break—a combination that creates a visible ridge of raised metal where the die fractured and shifted slightly. This die break at the 8 gives the variety its name and provides the easiest pickup point for quick identification. The doubled ear and 1, combined with the beveled tail feather on the reverse, supply additional diagnostics for full attribution.
