1883-O Repunched Date WRPD-001
Error
Description
An 1883/1 repunched date on the Morgan Dollar, the WRPD-001 shows repunching on the 1 to the south. Cross-referenced as VAM #4, this die also carries an independently cataloged repunched mintmark listed as WRPM-002, an O/O punched to the south, making it a combination RPD and RPM variety. Obverse die markers include die damage below the 18 in the date and a die scratch from the denticle above the dot between PLURIBUS and UNUM. The reverse shows extensive tool gouging: inside the upper area of the ribbon, on the first, second, fourth, and fifth lead clusters of the wreath on the left side, and on the upper area of the right wing. The tool gouging evidence on the reverse suggests significant die preparation or repair work, while the dual repunching—both the date 1 and the O mintmark—indicates this die pair received multiple positional adjustments during its setup, a characteristic that makes WRPD-001 particularly interesting to Morgan Dollar variety specialists.
