Description

=1878-P VAM-14.8 Doubled Eyelid= Discovered by Steve Contursi, October 1980. 14.8 I18 A1d (Doubled Eyelid) (189) Obverse I18 - Slightly doubled top of P in PLURIBUS. Eyelid doubled in front of eye about one third own from top. All left and right stars quadrupled towards rim. Entire date doubled with 1 doubled below upper crossbar, both 8s at top inside and lower left outside of upper loop and 7 below upper crossbar and right side of vertical shaft. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # The 1878-P VAM-14.8 is one of the ultra rare 8 Tailfeather Morgan coins. VAM-14.8 was struck as a proof & the dies were reused as a business strike. Because of rarity, the business strike typically sells for higher premiums than the proof. The recent 8TF census has shown the business strike VAM-14.8 is rarer than VAM-1878-P VAM-14.15. It has an A1d reverse, which it shares with VAMs 1878-P VAM-6, 1878-P VAM-7, 1878-P VAM-14.5, 1878-P VAM-14.8 and 1878-P VAM-14.19. VAMs 6 and 7 are relatively common, but the other three are major rarities.
