Description
=1878-P VAM-10 Doubled Motto= Discovered by Leonard Hinckley, February 1974. 10 I28 A1e ( Doubled Motto) (180) Obverse I28 - First six stars on left doubled on left and right sides. E PLURIB doubled on left side and at bottom. Doubled date with 1 doubled at top left, above bottom crossbar and on right side of vertical shaft. First 8 doubled at bottom left inside of lower loop and right outside of both loops. 7 doubled on right side of vertical shaft and top left serif. Second 8 doubled slightly at bottom inside and upper left outside of lower loop. Reverse A1e - Doubled left inside including legend, wreath & wing tip. Two small feathers added on eagle's right & left side between leg & bottom of wing. Slightly concave reverse. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # The 1878 VAM-10 is an 8 Tailfeather Morgan w/ the A1e reverse. This reverse is characterized by unique tailfeathers next to the eagle's wings including a spiked feather on the right side that is often used as a diagnostic when paired w/ the two curved feathers on the left side(see photo below). 1878-P VAM-15 also has the A1e reverse. # The 1878-P VAM-10 is frequently found w/ a PL or DMPL obverse.
