Description
1878 WDDO-009 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878 8 Tail Feathers Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Every letter of E PLURIBUS UNUM shows strong serif notches, with the widest separation on PLURIBUS's R and UNUM's first N, and the dots of EPU are thick. The points of every star are separated. The date is moderately doubled along its right side, most visibly on the 1 and 7. Light doubling shows on LIBERTY, the eyelash, the upper lip, the inside of the ear and the lower hair details. On the obverse, the first 8 has a short gouge on the left inside of its lower loop. Light scratches lie behind Liberty's eye, light polish lines show in the lower hair, and the nostril is lightly polished. The reverse is WDDR-010, an 8 tail feathers reverse. John A. Wexler submitted the variety, with photos by Brian Allen. Its VAM numbers are 4 and 17.
