1878-CC VAM-4

Description

Leroy Van Allen discovered this Carson City Morgan dollar in December 1965. Cataloged as VAM-4 revised under classification II 3 with a B1c reverse, the variety is titled Close CC and carries a rarity rating of 177. The obverse is a normal die of the 1878 Philadelphia Type II, featuring a broken point off the number 4 star on the right, a hub defect common to this die type. The reverse shows a type B1 die with widely spaced CC mintmarks at medium height, with die chips visible in the center of both letters. The right C is doubled at the bottom inside, appearing as an arc. Because 1878 dates were part of the master die, no positional variation exists across the issue. The obverse die also produced 1878-CC VAM-9 and 1878-CC VAM-28, while the reverse die served on 1878-CC VAM-18 and 1878-CC VAM-2B, creating an interconnected web of die marriages. Carson City Morgan dollars from the inaugural 1878 production year hold particular significance for collectors, as the CC mintmark from this small Nevada facility has long commanded premium prices across all grades and VAM attributions. =1878-CC VAM-4 Close CC= Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965.
