Description
1878-CC VAM-19 Wide CC with Dot Discovered by Jim Baxter, December, 1976. Revised 2008. 19 (revised) II1 - B1f (Wide CC with Dot) (179) Obverse II1 - Die 1 - Short vertical polishing line in front of eye and vertical die scratch across left cotton boll stem. Die 2 - Die scratch just below LIBER and diagonal die scratch from denticles up to sixth right star and raised lump at denticles next to sixth right star. Reverse B1f - Normal die of type B1 with widely spaced mint marks, III CC, at mediium height. Left C has die chip in center and is punched deeper than the right C. Die marker - Short vertical die scratch between eagle's left wing and neck. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse (Die 1): 19.1, 19.1 remarriage, 1878-CC VAM-19B Obverse (Die 2): 19.2, 1878-CC VAM-19A Reverse: 19.1, 19.2, 1878-CC VAM-19A, 19.1 remarriage, 1878-CC VAM-19B Comments: 1878-CC VAM 19.2 and 1878-CC VAM 19.1 have the exact reverse in different stages and a completely different obverse die. The two marriages do not share common obverse markers. 1878-CC VAM 19.1/19B is the earlier marriage, & the odd lumps around the E of ONE from the hub are polished away to traces part way thru this marriage. They are never present on a 1878-CC VAM 19.2/19A. The four key things anyone needs for the 19 reverse are the left C heavier than right C mintmark, the B1 long nock, the crack thru the bottom of DOLLAR & the little vertical gouge in the gap between the eagle's neck & wing (see below).
