Description
This 1787 copper has a bust of Governor George Clinton with the arms of New York and EXCELSIOR. New York never authorized a coinage of its own. Its assembly heard petitions to coin from John Bailey, Ephraim Brasher and Thomas Machin early in 1787 but passed only an act of April 20, 1787 that set the weight of the coppers allowed to circulate. Crosby believed most New York coppers were privately made, some perhaps as patterns offered to the state. Crosby notes that the G of GEORGE was first punched as a C and altered in the die, and he knew of no more than five examples. PCGS number 433.
