Description
This 1787 copper has the arms of New York with EXCELSIOR and an eagle facing right above the shield. New York never authorized a coinage of its own. Its assembly heard petitions to coin from John Bailey, Ephraim Brasher and Thomas Machin early in 1787 but passed only an act of April 20, 1787 that set the weight of the coppers allowed to circulate. Crosby believed most New York coppers were privately made, some perhaps as patterns offered to the state. Crosby pairs the arms die with an eagle reverse reading E PLURIBUS UNUM 1787. PCGS number 424.
