Description
This 1787 copper pairs an Indian with LIBER NATUS LIBERTATEM DEFENDO and the arms of New York with EXCELSIOR. New York never authorized a coinage of its own. Its assembly heard petitions to coin from John Bailey, Ephraim Brasher and Thomas Machin early in 1787 but passed only an act of April 20, 1787 that set the weight of the coppers allowed to circulate. Crosby believed most New York coppers were privately made, some perhaps as patterns offered to the state. Crosby found the arms die the same as on the George Clinton piece. PCGS number 436.
