Description
This 1786 copper has a bust in military dress with NON VI VIRTUTE VICI, in the small-head form. New York never authorized a coinage of its own. Its assembly heard petitions to coin from John Bailey, Ephraim Brasher and Thomas Machin early in 1787 but passed only an act of April 20, 1787 that set the weight of the coppers allowed to circulate. Crosby believed most New York coppers were privately made, some perhaps as patterns offered to the state. Crosby describes the reverse as Liberty seated with scales and the legend NEO-EBORACENSIS 1786, and had seen six or eight examples. PCGS number 422.
