Serving as instruments of diplomacy between the United States government and Native American nations, Indian Peace Medals represent one of the most historically significant categories in the entire U.S. Mint medal series. The tradition of presenting medals to Native leaders during treaty negotiations, trade agreements, and ceremonial visits dates to the colonial era, when both French and British authorities used medals bearing royal portraits to cement alliances with indigenous peoples. Following independence, the United States continued this practice with medals bearing the portrait of each sitting president, beginning with George Washington and continuing through the administration of Benjamin Harrison in the 1890s. The medals were produced in multiple sizes — typically designated as first, second, and third size — with the largest and most impressive examples reserved for the most prominent chiefs and leaders, while smaller versions recognized lesser dignitaries and alliance partners. Silver was the standard metal for presentation pieces, as Native recipients specifically valued the precious metal and regarded the weight and fineness of the medal as a measure of the respect accorded to them by the issuing government. The U.S. Mint produced Indian Peace Medals at the Philadelphia facility using the finest available engraving talent, and the resulting portraits constitute an important series of presidential likenesses spanning more than a century of American history. Surviving silver presentation pieces are exceptionally valuable, with major specimens commanding prices well into six figures at auction, as many medals were buried with their recipients or damaged through decades of ceremonial wear.
